Lesiones de Causa Externa en el Municipio de San Martín de Porres, Lima, Perú

Objective.-
There is a big concern in Lima, for the sudden grow, of traffic injuries. During 2005, were registered 77,840 collisions, with 3481 deaths and 46832, injuried, 70% of then occurred in Lima, and Callao. Police attribute 10.79% to alcohol consumption .Due to this reason some districts of Lima have applied ,regulation, to limited the hours to sell liquors in Restaurants, Bar, and Night Clubs, after midnight.
To have a base line we have characterized 16381 injuries, registered, during 2004, in the Hospital Nacional Cayetano Heredia, that serve the District of San Martin de Porras and vicinities.
Material and Methods.-
The registered were organized in three categories 1 (Occupational and recreational),2(Traffic accidents and Aggressions) and 0 (animal aggressions, and no typified)in relation ,to type of accident ,by age, sex, civil status, month of occurrence, day of the week and hour of occurrence, using Stata 8.

Results.-
The analysis reveals that:
1667(10.2%) were Group 0, 9153(55.9%) were Group 1 and 5563(34%) were Group 2 of the 16383 injuries registered.
67% were male lesions.(X²=258,2df,P<.0001)
79% were bachelor in Group 1 versus 74% in Group 2. (X²=110.6041,6 df.P,.000)
50%, of all injuries were between 12 and 38 years of age.
58% of Group 1 in Summer months,(X²=32.56,6df,P<.0001).
34.2%, 45.5% and 33.4% in Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, in Group 2 against 63.9%, 60.9% and 59.2% in Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday in Group1.(X²=348.4486,12df.P<.000)

64.3% of Group 2 against 28.5% of Group 1, happens between 03:00-to 6:00 am in Group 1. (X²=1.0e+03.14df.P<.000)

Discussion and Conclusions.-
The results found are very similar in relation to Group 2, to the ones found in Bogotá Colombia, were a restriction on the hours of expenditure of liquors were applied, reducing with this measures deaths in traffic accidents by 48% in a five years period. For this reason this Hospital should be considered a good observatory to evaluate the impact of similar measures.
